June 2023: Hydration tips for the summer months

As we age, our bodies become more susceptible to dehydration, especially during hot summer months. Staying hydrated is crucial for our overall health and wellbeing - it helps regulate body temperature, supports organ function, and maintains energy levels.

Today, we’re going to talk about some easy ways you can stay hydrated so you can enjoy the summer months safely.

Drink plenty of water: It goes without saying that water is the best way to stay hydrated. Make it a habit of drinking water regularly throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.

Eat hydrating foods: Certain fruits and vegetables have high water content and can contribute to your overall hydration. Water-rich foods include watermelon, cucumber, oranges, berries, and leafy greens, which not only provide hydration, but offer essential nutrients and antioxidants.

Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol: Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks can dehydrate the body, so it's best to consume them in moderation. If you enjoy your daily cup of coffee or an occasional alcoholic drink, remember to balance it out by increasing your water intake.

Try not to overheat: Avoid going outside during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10am and 4pm, with the heat peaking at midday. If you need to be outdoors, find shade or use an umbrella to protect yourself from direct sunlight. Plan outdoor activities during cooler morning or evening hours when the sun is less intense.

Be mindful of medications: Certain medications, such as diuretics or blood pressure medications, can increase the risk of dehydration. Consult with your doctor about potential side effects and adjust your fluid intake accordingly.

Drink before, during, and after physical activity: If you enjoy keeping fit, make sure to drink water before, during, and after exercise, to replenish fluids lost through sweat.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure that you stay hydrated, and by doing so you can safeguard your health, and enjoy the warm weather. Remember to prioritize your hydration needs and make it a habit to drink water regularly. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy the sunshine!
